This report reviewes recent experiences from a number of countries with shifting public - private roles in the pharmaceutical sector, and focuses on essential state functions in the sector, the current public-private mix, private sector mechanisms which help to ensure access to essential drugs in the public sector, and mechanisms which best promote the availability, affordability and rational use of drugs in the private sector.
