It describes the two-way relationship between health and economic development; the “burden of disease” approach to targeting health research and intervention funding in developing countries; and what is known (and what needs to be known) of a number of broader “inherently global health issues.” It discusses how research might address both disease-specific and inherently global health issues at the same time, and articulates principles for how such research might be conducted equitably between North and South partners. It concludes by identifying some implications for G8 and other wealthier nations with respect to health research and other forms of development assistance. (AU)
